Turn-ONS and Turn-OFFS for Turtles

A young sea turtle is genetically programmed to move toward the light over the water. If land lights are prominent, the turtles may go the wrong way and inevitably die. During this time, beach residents and visitors are asked to understand the local laws that are in effect to protect the life cycle of these amazing creatures.

Hotels and homes that are located on the beach are under light restrictions. Lights can simply be turned out. Shades can be drawn. Tinted windows can eliminate or reduce light and exterior lights can be set on motion sensors.

Once visitors understand this important reason for the low light restrictions, they are usually very enthusiastic in helping to make sure that the turtle hatchlings make a successful trip to the coastal waters after emerging. Visitors also need to be aware that there should be nothing left on the beach at night, like chairs and umbrellas that might impede a female turtle from building her nest in the sand.  With everyone's help and cooperation, we can help these incredible creatures in completing their life cycle.
